Twenty Things I Will Never Do

I loved this
thanks sealbark....
"This is part of an essay on Down syndrome that appears in the Spring 2008 issue of The New Atlantis.
In storage at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is the secret to what one professor calls “the first Down Syndrome Association in the history of the world.” In 1982, Dr. Brian Stratford, a specialist in developmental disabilities at the University of Nottingham, suggested in the journal Maternal and Child Health that the Italian Renaissance painter Andrea Mantegna used a little boy with Down syndrome as the model for his Christ child. Stratford made a “clear characteristic diagnosis” of the baby based on his distinctive facial features and the shape of his hands and toes. The Gonzaga family of Mantua, Mantegna’s sponsor, had a boy with an unidentified “sickness,” she said, and one of the artist’s own fourteen children shared this condition—a not insignificant factor in Ludovico Gonzaga’s choice of Andrea Mantegna as his court painter. Gonzaga and Mantegna appreciated the humanity of these children whom some might have preferred to hide away or let die, and that shared sensitivity gave them a “sense of purpose” with respect to disability which Stratford regrets has been all but forgotten by our society: “Perhaps Mantegna saw in this child something beyond the deficiencies which now so occupy our attention and perhaps then, the qualities of love, forgiveness, gentleness, and innocence were more readily recognized. Maybe Mantegna saw these qualities as more representative of Christ than others we now regard so highly.”“Wouldn’t it be wonderful,” another proud big brother asks in Gifts, “if every family had a kid with Down syndrome?”That question, of course, does not express the wish that more children would struggle with disabilities, but rather that more families might find within themselves the means to understand, and to transmit to future generations, the profound truth that every life is filled with meaning, and every child is a source of joy."
This story reminded me of the process i went through, when i went from wanting every one's condolences when we received 4 of 5's diagnosis, to realizing that the congratulations, were a gross understatement. I feel a surge of compassion and joy and hope and sympathy (not for the birth of a baby with DS, but because i know how they are feeling, and at that moment, it is sorrow) when i talk to parents with a new DS diagnosis. I have the opportunity to meet and talk to many new parents in UT because i am working as the new born contact for the UDSF. Although i can't 100% understand their struggles. Most have different heart or lung or liver problems, 4 of 5 didn't have, many don't live. But i do know that whether your new baby has DS or not doesn't matter at the moments when you are sitting in the NICU with them. We did sit there. There is a point after you bring them home and realize they are just another one of your kids, some take longer than others. I wish i could take the pain of that process from them. But it is one of the most unique experiences that they will ever have, and one that will force you to grow, and love more than you would ever think possible. And that is the process that i wish everyone could experience. Although i know this experience is not unique to DS. This was mine.
Executive decision
I have made a few choices lately, to simplify, and make life a bit more pleasant.1) i am going to make more homemade bread. Is there anything better than the smell and taste of homemade bread?
2)delegate. enough said.
and finally
3) i am going to stop potty training. I have noticed a higher level of stress in the past few days, and my baby has cried a lot more than she needed to. 4 of 5 isn't as ready as she could be, and would benefit from a 2 week break. I think we will wait until after our trip in June to start again, and just sit her on the potty between diaper changes and before bed and bath.
Can i tell you what a huge relief it was to put her back in a diaper this morning? It's funny because i am usually a pusher, and i have pushed to potty train. But i also get really short as I'm doing it. And i am just not going to do that to my family. I know that she is capable, and hopefully, she will get more ready in the next few weeks.
Anyway, 5 of 5 is waking up, I got 8 hrs from her last night! Hooray!!!!!

She's the Perfect Mom
Then i ran across this talk by Faust, and realized, We are ALL perfect moms. when we are busier finding the qualities we love about our friends spouse and children, instead of their faults, We qualify as a Perfect mom. If we are keeping up with the things that are important to us, and finding joy in our calling as mom, we are a perfect mom.
"Some of you sisters may feel inadequate because you can’t seem to do all you want to do. Motherhood and parenting are most challenging roles. You also have Church callings that you fulfill so capably and conscientiously. In addition, many of you, besides all this, have to work as well as care for your family. .... In general you noble sisters are doing a much better job of holding it all together and making it work than you realize. May I suggest that you take your challenges one day at a time. Do the best you can. Look at everything through the lens of eternity. If you will do this, life will take on a different perspective."
Calling Survey
I have been thinking a lot about callings lately. So i thought it would be fun to put together a calling survey. As i was thinking about questions for this, it made me remember a few of my past callings that i had forgotten about. I love it when i am talking to someone and they say, when i was teaching the 4 yr olds..... or when my husband was Bishop.... I'm like, really? i had no idea...... then you hear about having those callings like hymn book passer outter...... Ever done that one?
So i thought this would be a fun way to remember past callings, and find out a little about the things we've done.
1) What was your favorite calling? I think it would have to be RS pianist
2) what was your least favorite calling? That would be Nursery Leader. Not that it was a bad calling, but i had 3 kids under 3, and my life was already a nursery 24/7
3) What was the calling you struggled with the most? This one.
4) what was your first calling? I made the programs for Sacrament Meeting
5) What calling are you serving in now? How long? YW Pres. 18 months
6) What was the calling you had for the longest? How Long? Pianist in the RS 22 months
7) What calling did you serve in the shortest? How Long? Secretary in the Primary. 6 weeks
8) What was a calling your spouse had that you liked the best? Why? High Council. Because he was home a lot and he was able to go to school and he was around when we had 4 0f 5. And we got to know the Stake Presidency well.
9) What was the calling your spouse had that was hardest for you? Probably the secretary of the elders Quorum. He was very busy.
10) What is the calling that you would like? Your dream calling? RS teacher. I have taught Primary, and YW, I think RS would be next.
11) What are the other callings you've had that you didn't mention yet? Enrichment committee, Primary teacher 8-9 yr olds, den leader, compasionate service leader

Free recipe Friday 4

For this weeks recipe, i have the YUMMIEST cheese cake ever. You know what makes it even better.... it's easy. I am not a big fan of the no bake cheesecakes. It seems like they never are as dense as the kind you bake. And i think the thicker, the better. Also, i don't like the graham cracker crust when it's cooked. It becomes too crumbly, and some how, it always ends up over baked. (I'm pretty picky about my cheesecake, can you tell?) This one will not disappoint. It doesn't even need cherries or strawberries. Although, they are good, too.
OK, finely crush 12 graham crackers, then mix with 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup butter. Press into a spring form pan and set in fridge while you make the rest.
combine 2- 8oz packages of cream cheese, 2 beaten eggs, 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tsp vanilla. Beat well and pour over crust and bake for 20 min at 350. The recipe says 20 minutes, but i have found it's not solid until about 40. So after 20, just keep your eye on it until the center is not wiggly. Let cool for 1 hr.
While that is baking, combine 1 pint sour cream, 1/3 cup sugar and 1 tsp vanilla. Pour over the top of cooled cheese cake and bake at 450 for 10 minutes. This i have also found takes about twice as long. When it's done, put it in the fridge and let it set over night.
This is sooo good, and it's easy. ENJOY!
I found this in the Mormon Cookbook. Every recipe i have tried out of it i have really liked. It's where i got the ramen noodle salad I made for Rainbows baby shower 2 years ago.

ALL fixed
No, not the cat. But yes he is fixed, sometimes my pictures have nothing to do with my posts. We went in yesterday to get 4 of 5's cast redone, and as a surprise they said her arm was healed enough they didn't need to put a new one on. So we are officially cast free. Guess what that means...... I have been telling myself that once the cast was off, we would start potty training. I was hoping we still had 5 weeks left.... now i have no more excuses. Does anyone out there want to potty train her for me? With the 1st 3, i could just stay home and work on it. I don't have that kind of life anymore. And she's the one that is going to need it the most. I need one week of no going anywhere. Do you know how many meetings i have this week? Plus, I've started an exercise class in the mornings. Actually, i was thinking i should just start going to the gym with Sonya again. I've been up at around 5 every morning for the past 3 months anyway.
I don't want to come off as complaining. I am totally happy with my lot in life. Even with the camp stuff. I'm not complaining, I'm just voicing my concerns. So, i hope i hope i don't come of as bitter or anything. That's my Thursday post!.
Oh, we are going to put our garden in this weekend. So i will have pictures here in the next bit. If i can get my computer to cooperate. I tried to post a pict of 4 of 5's arm and it wouldn't let me up load them Or down load, i don't really know the difference. I almost typed her name, this kid by number thing is hard to remember sometimes. (That's for Brenda, we don't really call them by numbers. We just don't have any nick names for them)

On my mind Monday 3
SO, i guess it's appropriate to have something "mom" related today. As i rolled out of bed on Sunday morning, DH takes the baby, it's 6 am. He had been up a few times with 3 of 5 because his legs hurt. We haven't really pinpointed why his legs hurt, but every few months, he has a bad night. I think he has leg cramps. So we push the bananas and he's fine. Neither one of us slept very well Saturday. Luckily, or unluckily, they didn't have a bishopric meeting this morning. It's nice to have one less meeting, but i have my Sunday mornings down to a routine, I'm getting good at getting myself and 5 kids to church on time by myself.
So it dawned on me as i was cleaning up breakfast, the kids are fighting, and DH is hanging out with a screaming baby, that today, "Mothers Day" is no different than any other day. At first i was bummed out. Then i realized how great it was, that everyday is mothers day. Could i ask for anything better in life? I honestly would not trade that for the world. How grateful i am to have been given the ability to bare children, and raise them. How grateful i am for a husband who loves and supports me. I never doubt that he loves me and that makes me feel secure. He honors his priesthood, and supports me in my callings. And supports my need to stay home and raise our kids. What else could i need. I have it all, and add to that 5 healthy happy kids..... i have truly been blessed.

Free recipe Friday 3

Okay, for today's free recipe Friday, i would like to share my Artichoke jalapeno parm dip. This is a semi original creation. I tasted something similar that a store called "The Store" makes up in Cottonwood Heights, it was really yummy, but way too salty.
So, i take one can of artichokes. Do not use the marinated kind. Chop them into pieces
One 16 0z contained of grated parm. Use the stuff you find in the grocery cheese isle
2 whole jalapenos. Dry roast them and peal the skin off. Dice them. if you don't like hot, remove the seeds and membrane from them first.
Put all this stuff into a bowl and mix with equal part sour cream and mayo until it becomes the consistency you want. Then put a dash of lemon juice in.
Put in fridge overnight. I like to serve this with the garlic triscuts or tortilla chips.

EOB
Since i have just given my BLOG address to the UDSF for their veiwing pleasure, i thought i would do my own EOB. Althought, MY EOB is an explanation of Blog. My side bar has now been changed to my EOB.
I noticed on some of the other blogs from fellow UDSF board members, they had blogs set up just for their DS kids. I don't know if they have family blogs too, or not. But i do not have the time to do more than 1. And since all of 4 of 5's happenings include one or more of her siblings, and they always include myself or her dad..... i figured one big one would sefice. And really, she is just one of the kids. Maybe this blog will benifit someone that needs to know that our DS kids are not a sore thumb in our families. They are a special part of our little clan, just as my 1 of 5, who will do just about anything she is asked, and loves to make people happy, 2 of 5, who loves to make friends with everyone, 3 of 5, who is the most empathetic person i know and 5 of 5, who, is still developing or personality, but will no doubt will play an equal important role in our family. I hope my kids know how equally important they are to me. Our family consists off all 7 of us, and we need each part to function. 4 of 5 is no different from my the other kids, she gets time outs for doing naughty things (like coloring on the walls, over and over and over) she eats the same food, and is in the process of potty training, only a few months later than the rest of the kids.
My greatest blessings call me mom..........

What's goin on

Free recipe friday: part 2
This a picture from my sisters' visit this week. Now down to business.
This next recipe is for a chicken brocolli and curry dish that Marjean made for our family when we had 4 of 5. It was so ummy. In our family when we sit down to dinner, there is always 1 that doesn't like what we are having. I have only found one meal that everyone likes.... well it encompasses a lot, and it's mexican food. But that's just because they can make their plate the way they want it. But, enought of that. This chicken dish is one that 1 and 3 of 5 love. 2 of 5 asks for the rice, no, "stuff" on top.
So, you cook some chicken (3 breast chopped) i just cook how much chicken my family eats. i never measure.
2 10 oz bags of frozen brocolli. ( i always steam fresh brocolli)
1 8 oz pack cream cheese softened
1 can cream of mushroom soup ( i use what ever cream soup i have, brocolli, asperagus, chicken)
1 cup mil
2 TBS lemon
3/4 tsp curry, ( i use way more becasue i love curry)
1 tsp celery seed
Put brocolli and chicken in bottom of 9 x 13, then combine the rest of ingredience and pour over the top
bake 375 for 30 min and put over rice.

Yes, it's thursday..... SO
Anywho. My sister's have been in town for a few days, and i have to say, they could stay for another week. Usually, with company, i'm done after 2-3 days, i want my normal routine back. (sorry fam) But this has been so fun. The kids have been good, their kids have been good..... It's been fun. I have one sis with a 2 and 2 month old, and the other has a 6 month old. (yeah, they have a lot of catching up to do......) So we have had 8 kids under 8 here.
We took the kids to ride front Runner yesterday, Shawni came with her 4, i had 3, Korrie had 2 Kristy had 1. It was quite the sight..... Poor other riders.... The whole system was very disorganized, not just "us" but the whole train system. But the kids had fun, we came back with as many as we took. usually, that's all i need.
I still can't believe it May, mostly because we had snow flurries yesterday, and it was 32 this morning. I hope my fruit trees did alright...... But, yes, it's May.
Alright, tomorrow i'll post a recipe, maybe a desert. Maybe a casserole. i guess you'll have to read it to find out!
