On My Mind Monday

This has been on my mind all weekend. I've been hearing about these rice and wheat shortages all weekend. I've heard it's because of the alternative fuels. The corn that we feed the cows is being used to research new ways to power things, making meat milk cheese and eggs double in price. Does this seem like insanity to you. Is it just me, that thinks that in this mad rush to be "green" we are hurting ourselves? I honestly would rather pay more for gas (something i can, and have cut back on, ) something unnessisary. Then not be able to afford to feed my family. food, you know, that stuff you can't do with out.
Or, why is it, that the fuel efficient vehicles, and the energy saving appliances, are so expensive, the people who need them to cut back on their utility bills, can't afford them. I would love one of those front loading washers. They use half the water and electricity. Have you seen the price of those. Or a tankless water heater....... It just reinforces the goal of selfseficient. (sp) But it makes me sad for my kids. I will need to make sure they know how to garden, and provide for themselves. And really stress the importance of going to school.
I don't really feel "doom and gloom" or anything. I know we will be taken care of, and we will be able to take care of our "needs" But i am amazed at what people consider "needs". But some of those things sure are nice, and make life easier.

Totally had a sad moment

I had a sad moment this morning. 5 of 5 slept for 8 hrs last night, (not the sad part) when she woke up and started crying, it was no longer that cute baby cry. She's a baby now, not a new born. Broke my heart. And even the sleeping part..... i actually am okay with them waking up at night.( once. that's all they get, then i'm not happy ) It's really the only one on one time i have with my babies. So, yes, i'm sad that she slept through the night.
And while i've got you...... we took our family to the Extreme Pinewood Derby that out elders put on every year. Such a fun night, but there were only 6 families that showed up, that included us. It was so sad. They put a lot of effort into planning activities, only to have no one show up. All church activites are going to dissapear if they don't get supported..... I miss things like ward camps out..... and ward BBQ's. I miss the lunches we used to do, and the other moms that would bring their kids to the park for lunch, or McD's during the winter. what do you do? Are people just too busy? To busy to do the fun stuff?
Okay, that's my rant.

introducing..... FREE RECIPE FRIDAY

Okay, so i thought about starting this on Monday, but decided that Monday's are too busy. It is really hard for me to recover from the weekend. Especially Sunday.
So what i thought i'd do, is post them on Fridays, you try them sometime during the week, and rate them. I would also liko your recipes. I will try them, and post them. Keep them super simple. quick and easy is the key. I will also put the origin of the recipe, so if you give me a good one, you will get the credit. Also, i'm not a measure everything person, i'm a little of this a pinch of that, i love garlic, so i add it to most everything.
Here it goes.
This is my all time favorite potato recipe. I use it as a side dish with out adding meat, or as a main dish and put ham in it. I can put it together at 9 am and put it in the fridge, or the night before, or at 3 in the afternoon.
Okay, slice enough potatoes to feed your fam. I usually slice 7-8. Mix up about 2 cups milk, half and half or cream, (the heavier the better it tastes) with 3-4 tbsp whole mustard and pour a little of it on the bottom of a cassorole dish. Then layer potato, cheese, and the stuff you just mixed up. top with cheese and remaining milk and bake at 350 for 1 1/2 hrs. This really is the best potato au graten recipe. Let me know what you think.
This one i got from one of those KBYU Saturday morning cooking shows. The guy that was showing the recipe said he always got asked to bring it to pot lucks.

Here's what I want

Trip to Topaz

I wasnt sure how to write next to the pictures, so the pictures are below. DH took Wed. off to take the kids rock hunting. My kids LOVE to find cool rocks, there pockets are full of them just from the walk home from school. they totally get that from their dad (or me, but i don't tell DH that) So we took off about 8:30 deciding to take the back way there. there ended up being a lot of roads out there that weren't on the map, so we ended up at a locked Dugway fence a lot. I got a little nervous a few time driving around in the middle of nowhere with no "bars" on the phone. Mostly i was worried about getting back for YW that night, becasue i was in charge of the activity. But, as you can see, all was well, 5 of 5 even behaved. This is the one that hates the car seat. Although, she has been doing much better these past few weeks, not quite such a grump.
The kids all found some cool geods (SP) and tilobites (i had no idea what these things were until 2 days ago) We love to drive around, just get in the car and go. It usually takes us 12 or more hrs' to get to Vegas because we hate the 15, and we like to take the back roads and stop at cool places, and find little towns. That is just what we do.
