It's done

I finally made it to my kids class to talk about DS with them. my 3rd grader, is in a class with 75% of them being girls. My 2nd grader is in a class with 80% boys. Guess which one was easier. (guess; hey that's one of his spelling words) What a difference 1 school year makes. And what a difference there is between boys and girls. 2 of 5's teacher said she has never been that worn out after a days work, as she is after a day with this class. It was wild. One of the neat things about this class, when I was talking about some of the health issues kids with DS have when they are born, one little boy raised his hand and showed off his scar from OHS. Kind of cool that I could show that kids with DS are pretty much the same in ALL aspects. Some kids learn slower, some kids grow slower and some have holes in their heart.
What I took away from that: When I asked at the beginning, what they knew about DS, every one that answered said that it was a disease. A few thought it was eczema, and some thought it was like a cold. Some of them thought their sister might have it. And I knew one of them had a cousin with DS and told her that I knew her family, and all of the sudden 4 or 5 of them had cousins with it. 7 8 and 9 year olds are very odd. But at least now I know mine are normal. ]
It was fun, and I hope that some of them got something from it. And if nothing else, I hope they took away what I wanted to get across. Every one wants to be treated kindly. Everyone needs friends. And we really are all the same.
