So I went out to the yard to check for dog evidence. What I really wanted to do was prove the dog didn't do it. Like I suspected. And like I suspected, it was not our dog. But what did it, poses an even bigger problem. I was a raccoon. I have never encountered one of the vermin. Husband has. He said they are vicious creatures, and having a coon hound is not going to help with the problem like i was hoping. Apparently our dog doesn't eat them, he trees them. And if cornered, the raccoon would tear our pup up. And now that the raccoon knows we have chickens, it will keep coming back, so we now have to pen up the chickens and lock them in at night. Maybe we'll get a trap from the shelter. And as i knew getting into this, we were bound to loose a few to vermin.
Now, on to the next problem, what do I do about my 3 yr old wanting to alway sit on my 1 year old......

Hi! We used to let our chickens free range, but a hawk started carrying them away. We did have something get in the coop once, so dh put a stretchy net fencing over the top and secured it with hog rings. You also have to make sure there are no holes along the bottom. Sometimes when the chickens scratch near the fence it creates an opening.
We bought them a new building and put up a new coop this summer. It isn't fenced on top, but so far they have been safe in their house. If you are getting 7 eggs a week in the winter that is great!
I also have a sometimes snotty 9 yo daughter. It started when she was 8. Apparently homeschooling didn't prevent this like I thought it would. She started public school this year and its only gotten a tad worse.
