I got this letter yesterday from the older kids' school. It made me laught. It made Trent mad. Then I thought, is this wrong?
Dear parents,
Tomorrow, Dec. 21st our students will be watching "Santa Paws". The PTA would like enough parent volunteers to sit with the kids so the teachers can have that time to themselves. If you are able to donate your time please come. Check in at the office, you will sit and supervise a group of children in the gym.
Then they give the times for each movie.
Ok, so is this wrong. Is it me, or do already pay taxes, that pay your salary, and now you are asking me to come so you can have some time to yourself? maybe after I come and do your job, you can come to my house so I can have some time to myself. I haven;t had any of that in YEARS. Don't you have over an entire week, starting tomorrow, for time with out my kids, for yourself? Don't get me wrong, I love my kids teachers. For the most part, I have liked all of them. They do a good job. But this just rubbed me the wrong way. And Trent took it a little differently than I did. He would also LOVE some time to himself.
Here's my suggestion. Next time, ask for volunteers to come watch the movie with the kids so you can do something school related. That will go over better. Especially since it's during school hrs. And for the record, I don't agree with all the down time the kids have the week before any major holiday, and the month when the teachers are done at the end of the school year, where my kids do nothing.

Ok I am probably the wrong one to comment on this but I know what it is like as a teacher. It is hard and unlike most jobs you get paid for the PRE work for the job and you get extra fun stuff the company does for you. But teachers have to spend so much of unpaid time planning and Preparing lesson plans and conferences and grading......I think they deserve a lot more than they are paid for.
I don't know all the reasons your school did this but I understand many reasons why it would be a good thing for the teachers!
Yeah, this is odd. I totally understand and agree that teachers are underpaid, but they know that going into the career. But to ask parents to babysit their own kids and other kids during school hours is ridiculous. Just give them the day off school if you want the time for the teachers. Plus! If you're looking for volunteers, yes they're parents, but you have no idea what kind of crazy is volunteering to watch your kid. At least teachers are certified and have background checks. Yeah, again, this is ridiculous.
While I agree, teachers are COMPLETELY underpaid and deserve much more than a break, I don't like idea of random people watching my kids. (I guess that would get me to volunteer, huh?) If they need the break right before the already scheduled Christmas break, why don't they just end school a day earier? Hmm. Odd.
You probably don't want me to comment on this one.
I am a former school teacher and I am with you Kelly. I wouldn't let my kids go to school that day, not knowing who was looking after them. And movies? really? Thanks but I can plug a movie in for my kids at home way easier than sending them to school to see movies. If I need a babysitter for my kids, I usually just hire one. I send my kids to school to become educated, not to get babysat by a stranger. What a waste of a day and a waste of a potential "teaching moment"!
*Clapping* You hit the nail on the head. I do not like it when teachers do this and I do not like the whole movie thing--I can do that for my kids at home I don't need to send them to school to watch a movie. My favorite is when a teacher brings in an R-rated movie for them to watch--yeah that gets me over to the school in a hurry. I vote for letting the kids out earlier.
